We are so fortunate to have so many amazing employees with diverse and interesting backgrounds! This is the story of Henrique Rodrigues Salvador (or just “Rick” for short!), our superstar IN Store product photographer and web master!
Henrique Salvador by Jenni Filman
Before moving to Canada and studying at George Brown College, Rick was a developer living and working in Brazil. He worked with mainframe programming for two years before moving on to web development for another six years. Henrique’s fascination with user experience design was just beginning to grow when his Visa was approved to come to Canada four years ago. Him and his husband packed up their bags and headed north to Toronto in search of new culture, language, opportunities, and safety.
AdjustingMoving to Canada was a big adjustment for Rick. Leaving a comfortable job he enjoyed in Brazil was difficult, but he had his sights set on something bigger. However, transitioning from speaking his native Portuguese to English proved to be one of the biggest barriers for Rick. “I wouldn’t even go to Starbucks alone. They would ask me a question and I would just leave.”
That all changed when six months after his arrival in Canada, Rick took a Photography 101 course. This was the first time he went out of his way to interact with people in English without his partner by his side and his interest in landscape photography was ignited. “I started travelling in Canada to explore the landscapes — a cool trip was when we went to Vancouver and went on hikes to take photos as well. I’ve always loved forest and mountains.”

Henrique was hired by the IN Store & Studio for his extensive experience in photography, UX design, web and app development. Even with his background being a developer and a landscape photographer, he still had things to learn. “I think the favourite part was all of the feedback I got when I started. Coming from only photographing landscape, sometimes my photos of the products were too moody. They weren’t very ‘IN’. Jen and Lori helped me learn how to adapt my own style to the needs of the organization, which was a great learning process.” says Salvador.
Henrique says he enjoys working at IN because of “the support from friends in school and colleagues at the IN Store. They’re cheering for you. They want you to work towards being your best self.”

Henrique graduates from George Brown College in April 2019 from Interaction Design and Development. He plans to continue living in Canada with his partner and is looking forward to the opportunity to “get more adventurous and get involved in more creative things.”
On top of all of his other skills and interests, Rick is also passionate about film. He says "it would be very cool to design experiences and interfaces for Sci-Fi and Fantasy movies."
His aspiration for when he graduates is to work with UX Research & Design in industries that can positively impact society and are meaningful to him such as education, healthcare, and building better cities!
You can reach out to us through the comments if you have any opportunities that might be perfect for Rick!
